The Center of Gender Culture of Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University held a lecture-discussion on “Hate speech: recognition and counteraction” as part of a series of thematic curatorial hours. The speaker was Olha Bakulina, Regional Coordinator of Public Relations of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights in Luhansk Oblast.
The students actively asked questions about the distinction between the human right to freely express one’s views and beliefs and statements that constitute hate speech. The participants of the discussion gave actual examples of hate speech, asked about legislative regulation and prosecution for the use of hate speech.
Halyna Tatarenko, Head of the Center of Gender Culture at the Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University, spoke about the peculiarities of the university’s communication policy and compliance with ethical rules in the university community.
