Therapy: «Shakespeare’s Tragic Vision»

An open online lecture by Andrew L. Jarelli, PhD, a literary scholar specializing in American and Western European literature, folklorist and journalist, organized by the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, on “Shakespeare’s Tragic Vision” was held.

A few words about the lecturer: He has taught at New York University, the University of Utah, and Portland State University in the United States; twice he was a Fulbright Senior Lecturer (Malta 1993, Slovakia 2011). He is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Literature and Journalism and the Department of Art, Culture and Society at the Anglo-American University in the Czech Republic. He also teaches at the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Vienna (Austria).

A few words about the lecture: The lecture was devoted to the work of the outstanding world classic W. Shakespeare. “How do Shakespeare’s tragedies differ from their ancient predecessors and modern successors?”, “How do they differ from the ancient ones, where people were blindly, but quite understandably, forced to make choices that depended only on the whims and will of the gods?”, “And how do they differ from the modern ones, in which people are sacrificed to the forces of an incomprehensible world?”, “What is the relevance of Shakespeare’s characters today?” – these and other questions were discussed by Andrew Jarelli during his lecture. The two hours of the lecture and the lively, interesting, question-and-answer discussion were held in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

A few words about the guests: the open lecture brought together more than 80 fans of Shakespeare’s work and those interested in world literary classics. These were students of all bachelor’s and master’s courses of the specialty 035.041 “Philology. Germanic Languages and Literatures (Translation Included), First – English”, 014.021 “Secondary Education. English Language and Foreign Literature”; teachers and students of the Department of Journalism and Ukrainian Studies (the review can be found here: DAILY DAL: Literary critic Andrew Girelli gave a lecture “Shakespeare Tragic Vision” at Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University (newspaperdailydal.blogspot.com)), students of psychology, history, cultural studies and future specialists in technical specialties of Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University. The invitation was warmly accepted by fellow philologists and students from other universities in Ukraine.
