Olena Karchevska, a representative of the Department of Economic, Legal and Socio-Political Disciplines of the Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University, attended the training “EcoFactCheck: How does Russian propaganda exploit the Ukrainian environment?” The event was organized within the framework of the enWAR_mental project, which is being implemented with the support of the European Union under the EU scholarship program for civil society leaders of the Eastern Partnership countries.
During the event, real-life examples of environmental disinformation were discussed and characteristic signs that can be used to recognize fake news from unreliable sources were identified. Russia’s narratives about the Ukrainian environment were analyzed in detail, and how propaganda adapts to the modern information space was analyzed.
In the context of the World Media Literacy Day, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of critical perception of information, such initiatives are extremely relevant. After all, media literacy helps citizens to protect themselves from manipulation, make informed conclusions and take responsible decisions, which are key to protecting Ukrainian statehood and information sustainability in the modern world.
Olena Karchevska also actively introduces elements of media literacy into academic disciplines, in particular into the Information Policy course, which this year was chosen by about 50 students of various specialties as an elective component.
Students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences also joined the activities dedicated to World Media Literacy Day, taking the National Media Literacy Test and getting quite good results.
