Olha Porkuian, Rector of the Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University, took part in the forum “Education of Luhansk Region: Recovery and Reintegration”. The event was held as part of the implementation of the Swiss-Ukrainian project DECIDE – “Decentralization for the Development of Democratic Education”.
The conference organizers presented the Strategy for the Restoration and Development of Education in Luhansk Oblast for 2023-2027, aimed at overcoming the consequences of russia’s full-scale armed invasion of Ukraine and the temporary occupation of certain districts of Luhansk Oblast since 2014.
The forum was attended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, members of parliament, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, the Ministry of Reconstruction and the Ministry of Reintegration, the Educational Ombudsman of Ukraine, the Embassy of Switzerland in Ukraine, the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, as well as heads of military administrations of settlements and educators of the Luhansk region.
The following issues were discussed:
- the current state of education in Luhansk region during the war;
- challenges that will be faced in the process of restoring the functioning of the education system in the de-occupied territories;
- peculiarities of the organization of the educational process in the conditions of war;
- ensuring children’s right to quality and affordable education.
Speakers reported on how education should be restored and what role different institutions should play in restoring institutions should play in the recovery of the region.
In her report, Olha Porkuian stated that the Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University has been actively involved in preparing for these processes and will play a significant role in the future, not only in rebuilding education but also in revitalizing the entire region.
