Researching Ukrainian dialects is important

Associate Professor of the Department of Journalism and Ukrainian Studies Iryna Hlukhovtseva took part in a scientific seminar of the Department of Lexicology, Lexicography and Structural and Mathematical Linguistics and an open meeting of the Academic Council of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

As part of these events, the researcher attended open lectures by Liudmyla Riabets, PhD in Philology, Senior Researcher at the Department of Dialectology of the Institute of Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, on “Lexicographic Format of Ukrainian Dialects of the Late Twentieth and Early Twenty-First Centuries” and a lecture by Iryna Kazymyrova, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor, on “Ukrainian Historical Linguistic Terminography in the Slavic Context: Experience and Prospects.”

During the lectures, the leading linguists raised the problem of compiling dialect dictionaries, the issue of collecting material for them, and noted that more attention should be paid to living speech, because it is our memory, our history. They emphasized the importance of researching and preserving dialects, recalled the first dialect dictionaries, and noted the importance of reprinting these lexicographical works.
